Edward Draper’s Photography

My love of old photographic printing processes - especially in the digital age

I have been a keen photographer for just over a decade and a half and I have only recently come to using these old processes. What I enjoy about these processes, particularly with gum printing, is that it is such a free and liberating medium. I love the textures and finish you get with these processes.

I deliberately leave brush strokes visible and I love to leave the edges of the photograph rough. Though many of my prints have sharp edges - but those edges are not the straight borders, but hug the subject. You can see this on the Hand Gum Prints on this web site.

This means that each picture is completely unique. Even if I tried I could not reproduce a photograph exactly.

It also means that I have to throw away quite a lot of prints because the effect is not what I want.

But that is part of the joy.
